Is NHS dental treatment free for students?

By The Local Dentist Editorial · Updated 13 August 2026

What to bring

If you claim an education-related exemption, bring the evidence the practice asks for. If you are 19+, use the free NHS dental checker and the NHS Low Income Scheme where relevant.

University students aged 19 and over

A student loan or a university card does not by itself waive NHS dental charges. If you are 19 or older, you pay England bands unless another exemption applies — pregnancy, qualifying benefits, or an HC2 certificate. If you cannot get an NHS place, a private check-up is a separate fee; it does not create an NHS exemption. Use the free NHS dental checker, then take evidence to the practice before treatment starts.

People Also Ask

Are apprenticeships treated like full-time education?

Exemption rules are specific — check the current NHS list rather than assuming. Reception can tell you what proof they need.

Is the check-up free if I am a student?

Only if you meet an exemption (under 18, or 18 in full-time education, or another listed category). Otherwise an NHS exam in England is Band 1 at £27.90, including clinically needed X-rays in that course.
