A dental check-up (examination) is the foundation of dental care: the dentist assesses your teeth, gums and soft tissues, screens for oral cancer, takes X-rays when needed, and agrees a treatment plan with you. On the NHS in England a check-up is a Band 1 course of treatment at a fixed £27.90; examinations are free in Scotland. Wales uses care-package fees rather than bands: an adult recall examination costs £25 and a new-patient assessment £27.21. Privately, prices vary by practice and typically run £45–£95, often including small X-rays. Many practices bundle a check-up and hygienist visit together, and dental payment plans (around £10–£40 a month) usually cover routine examinations. How often you need one is a clinical decision — NICE guidance supports intervals from 3 months to 2 years depending on your oral health, not an automatic six-monthly recall. If it's been more than two years since your last examination, book one to catch problems early.

It depends on your oral health. NICE guidance supports recall intervals from 3 months (higher risk) up to 2 years (healthy adults) — your dentist should recommend an interval for you rather than defaulting to every six months. Children are usually seen at least once a year.
Not for most adults in England — it's the Band 1 charge of £27.90 unless you're exempt (under 18, pregnant or a mother in the last 12 months, on qualifying benefits, or holding an HC2 certificate). NHS dental examinations are free for everyone in Scotland, and children get free NHS dental care throughout the UK.
Not automatically. On the NHS, a scale and polish is included in Band 1 only when clinically needed. Privately, most practices charge separately for hygienist appointments (typically £55–£120), though some offer combined check-up-and-hygiene bookings or include hygiene visits in a monthly plan.
