How should I budget for private dental treatment?
By The Local Dentist Editorial · Updated 13 August 2026
A simple budgeting checklist
List diagnosis costs, treatment options (NHS vs private where both exist), laboratory fees, sedation if any, and review visits. Ask what happens if extra work appears mid-course. Compare at least two practices for large private plans.
NHS first, then private extras
If the work is clinically necessary and you can get an NHS place, England bands are usually cheaper than private quotes for the same items. Budget private money for what NHS does not cover — whitening, most veneers, adult aligners, implants — and for faster access. Get two written private quotes for laboratory-heavy work. A monthly dental plan only helps if you will use the included visits. Never pay a large deposit without a dated plan and a cooling-off conversation.
People Also Ask
Are online quotes reliable?
Online figures are starting points. Final private fees follow an examination. Prefer practices that publish price lists and put plans in writing.
Should I use 0% finance?
Only after you know the cash price and that the credit is FCA-authorised. Finance is not a discount. Add fees and the term; compare with paying the written quote in stages.
