How much is a filling on the NHS?

By The Local Dentist Editorial · Updated 13 August 2026

One course, one charge

England’s banding means you pay for the course, not each tooth. Two fillings planned together usually still cost £76.60 once, provided they stay within the same course and do not escalate to Band 3 work such as a crown.

When does a filling become Band 3?

A filling stays Band 2 in England. If the same course also needs a crown, bridge or denture, the whole course is Band 3 at £332.10 for 2026/27 — you do not pay Band 2 plus Band 3. Private “white filling” quotes are usually per tooth and per material. Ask which items are NHS before you accept an upgrade on back teeth.

People Also Ask

Are white fillings free on the NHS?

White (composite) fillings can be provided on the NHS where clinically appropriate, especially on front teeth. Practices may discuss private material options for back teeth — that must be agreed in advance, not sprung on you after treatment.

Do I pay again if a filling needs a second visit?

Not if it is the same agreed course. NHS charges are per course, not per visit. A new cavity found months later, after the course is closed, can start a new Band 2 charge unless you are exempt.
