How much is a crown on the NHS?

By The Local Dentist Editorial · Updated 13 August 2026

What the NHS crown charge includes

The Band 3 fee covers the course that includes the crown — preparation, temporary cover where used, fitting, and other NHS treatment in the same course. Material choices on the NHS are clinically driven; cosmetic upgrades are usually private.

Private crowns vs the NHS course

A private crown is priced by material, laboratory and time — often several times Band 3. If you are offered a private upgrade, ask what the NHS crown would be, why they recommend the upgrade, and the total if something fails. The England NHS fee is still £332.10 for the Band 3 course when the crown is NHS, including related visits in that course. Get both options on the written plan. Cosmetic-only crowns are private.

People Also Ask

Can I choose a white crown on the NHS?

Where clinically appropriate, tooth-coloured crowns can be provided on the NHS. Exact materials vary by case — ask what is included before you accept a private upgrade.

Does a root canal plus crown cost two bands?

If both are in the same England course and the crown takes it to Band 3, you pay one Band 3 charge of £332.10, not Band 2 plus Band 3.
