Understanding course boundaries stops surprise re-charges. If you return months later with a new issue, that is often a new course. If you are mid-plan for a crown, follow-up fits in the same course.
When does a new course usually start?
A new examination after a completed plan, a new problem months later, or a long unexplained gap can all start a new course — and a new England band charge (£27.90, £76.60 or £332.10 for 2026/27) unless you are exempt. Ask the practice to say when the current course is closed. Returning for the review the dentist already planned is usually the same course, not a second Band 1.

Can I pause a course?

Do I pay each time I sit in the chair?
No. NHS charges are per course of treatment, not per visit. Several appointments for the same agreed plan normally stay one band or care-package fee. A new problem after the course is closed is different.
