Do I pay for the NHS dentist on Pension Credit?

By The Local Dentist Editorial · Updated 13 August 2026

Do not rely on prescription rules

Free prescriptions and free dentistry are different schemes. Always verify dental exemptions on the dental rules list, not the prescription list.

How to check before you are treated

Ask the practice which exemption category they will record, and take the matching letter or HC2/HC3 certificate. If you are not exempt, England NHS courses are still the national bands — Band 1 £27.90, Band 2 £76.60, Band 3 £332.10 — not a pensioner tariff. Age alone is not an exemption. If you cannot get NHS care, private fees are the practice’s own prices; do not assume a discount. Use our free NHS dental checker, then confirm with reception.

What evidence should I take?

Take benefit award letters or HC2/HC3 certificates as applicable. Practices must see valid evidence to waive charges.

Does Pension Credit Guarantee Credit always mean free dentistry?

It often qualifies, but you must match the current NHS list and show evidence. Do not tick an exemption you are not entitled to — incorrect claims can lead to a penalty charge.
