Are X-rays included in NHS Band 1?

When X-rays are taken
Dentists decide based on clinical need and guidelines — not every check-up needs new radiographs. If you are unsure why an X-ray is recommended, ask; if it is part of an NHS Band 1 course, it should not attract an extra NHS fee.
When an X-ray would not be Band 1
If you are having Band 2 or Band 3 treatment in the same course, X-rays sit inside that higher band rather than adding a second fee. Private X-rays, CBCT scans, or films taken outside an NHS course are the practice’s private prices. You can ask why a radiograph is needed; guidelines exist so films are not taken “just in case” without a reason. England Band 1 remains £27.90 for 2026/27 for the exam course when that is the highest band.

Can I refuse an X-ray?
You can discuss risks and benefits and decline, but the dentist may be unable to complete a full assessment without them. That is a clinical conversation, not a pricing trick.
Do children pay for NHS X-rays?
Under-18s (and 18-year-olds in full-time education) are exempt from NHS dental charges, including X-rays that are part of NHS care. Confirm the visit is actually NHS.
