Private Dentist Costs UK: What to Expect
Private fees are set by practices. Check-ups often run £45–£95. Get a written plan — NHS bands are fixed nationally and often cheaper for necessary work.

What should I do, step by step?
- Ask what the “from” price includes. Exam-only versus exam plus X-rays plus hygienist are different products. A cheap check-up that bills radiographs extra can cost more than an inclusive fee.
- Get a written plan for anything beyond an exam. Crowns, root canal, dentures, implants and aligners need the full fee, laboratory extras, review visits, and the total repayable if finance is offered.
- Check the NHS option for clinically necessary work. England Band 2 is £76.60 and Band 3 is £332.10 per course in 2026/27. Private can win on speed or materials; it should not win because nobody mentioned NHS.
- Compare two practices before a large deposit. Deposits for scans or lab work should say whether they are refundable. A “today only” price is a sales clock unless the dentist gives a clinical reason to start now.
Are private dental prices regulated in the UK?
No. Private fees are set by each practice. What is regulated is who may practise (GDC) and, in England, CQC registration of the location. There is no national private price list. NHS charges are the regulated patient fees, and they do not vary by practice within a nation.
That is why two neighbouring practices can charge different exam fees and both be legitimate. Compare like with like: exam only versus exam plus X-rays plus hygienist. A £49 “check-up” that bills radiographs extra can lose to a £70 inclusive exam.
For clinically necessary fillings, extractions, root canal and dentures, check NHS access first. England Band 2 is £76.60 and Band 3 is £332.10 per course in 2026/27. Private can still win on speed or materials; it should not win because nobody mentioned the NHS option.
What do private check-ups, hygiene and common treatments cost?
Use ranges as orientation, not quotes. On this site’s published figures, private check-ups often sit around £45–£95, hygienist visits £55–£120, white fillings £90–£300, and emergency assessments £50–£150. City hubs show local check-up and whitening benchmarks. Confirm the written plan.
| Treatment | Typical private range | NHS alternative (England 2026/27) |
|---|---|---|
| Check-up / exam | £45–£95 | Band 1 £27.90 |
| Hygienist visit | £55–£120 | Only if clinically necessary inside a banded course |
| White filling | £90–£300 | Band 2 £76.60 when clinically appropriate |
| Emergency assessment | £50–£150 | Urgent £27.90 |
| Professional whitening | From about £250 | Not available on the NHS |
| Single implant | Practice quote; see implant calculator | Almost never NHS except rare reconstruction cases |
How do you avoid bill shock on a private plan?
Ask what a “from” price includes, whether X-rays and reviews are extra, and whether laboratory fees are separate. For crowns, implants or aligners get a written plan with the full fee, any finance total repayable, and what happens if you stop treatment. Compare two practices before you pay a large deposit.
Dental finance is regulated credit. Check the practice is FCA-authorised and read the total repayable, not the monthly figure. A 0% 12-month plan is a different product from a longer interest-bearing plan.
Deposits for scans or laboratory work should be explained in writing, including whether they are refundable if you do not proceed. If a deal is only available today, that is a sales clock, not a clinical deadline — unless the dentist has given a clinical reason to start immediately.
What questions do patients ask next?
Are private prices regulated?▼
Private fees are set by practices. What is regulated is who may practise (GDC) and, for England practices, CQC registration of the location — not a national private price list.
Why is a private filling more than NHS Band 2?▼
NHS Band 2 is £76.60 for the whole course in England, which can include more than one filling. Private fees are usually per tooth and per material. If NHS access exists, ask for the NHS option before you accept a private quote for the same clinically necessary work.
Where can I see local private prices?▼
City pages on The Local Dentist show check-up and whitening benchmarks. Practice profiles show published “from” fees where the practice has given them. Missing prices mean “not yet published”, not “free”.
Where do these figures come from?
Every specific number on this page is taken from a named primary source. We do not invent NHS charges or private quotes.
- NHSBSA KA-02003 — NHS dental charges (for the NHS comparison) (checked 17 July 2026)
- The Local Dentist UK dental price index (checked 13 August 2026)
Private ranges on this page are orientation figures from published treatment data on The Local Dentist, not a quote. NHS figures are the 2026/27 national rates. Always confirm with the practice.
