Emergency Dentist

Compare emergency dental appointments — same-day private slots, NHS urgent care via 111, typical call-out fees, and when to go straight to A&E.

Dental emergencies — severe toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost crown, an abscess or swelling — usually need same-day attention. You have two routes: NHS urgent dental care, accessed by calling NHS 111 (a fixed £27.40 urgent charge in England, whether or not you're a regular patient anywhere), or a private emergency appointment, where the assessment fee typically runs £50–£150 with any treatment (temporary dressing, extraction, first stage of root canal) charged on top. Many practices keep same-day emergency slots for both NHS and private patients, and some cities have dedicated emergency clinics open evenings and weekends. One rule overrides everything: if you have facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma involving possible jaw injury, go to A&E or call 999 — those are medical emergencies, not dental appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an emergency dentist cost?

NHS urgent dental treatment costs a fixed £27.40 in England, arranged by calling NHS 111. Private emergency appointments typically charge £50–£150 for the assessment, with treatment costed separately — for example a temporary filling, extraction (£100–£350) or the first stage of root canal treatment. Ask for the fee structure when you book.

How do I see an NHS dentist in an emergency?

Call NHS 111 (or use 111 online). They assess urgency and can book you into an urgent dental care slot, even if you haven't seen a dentist for years — you don't need to be a 'registered' NHS patient anywhere. If you have a regular practice, phone them first: most reserve same-day emergency appointments.

When should I go to A&E instead of a dentist?

Go to A&E or call 999 for facial or neck swelling that affects breathing, swallowing or opening your eye, bleeding that won't stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure, or facial trauma with a suspected broken jaw. Everything else — including severe toothache — is best handled by a dentist or NHS 111.

What should I do with a knocked-out adult tooth?

Time matters. Handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse briefly if dirty, and ideally push it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it in milk or inside your cheek and see a dentist within the hour if at all possible. Baby teeth should never be re-implanted — see a dentist anyway.

Can an emergency dentist see me if I'm not their patient?

Yes. Private emergency clinics see anyone, and NHS urgent care arranged through 111 doesn't depend on being anyone's existing patient. You'll pay the practice's emergency fee privately, or the £27.40 NHS urgent charge (England) unless you're exempt.
