Crowns & Bridges

Compare dental crown and bridge prices — materials, per-unit private costs, the NHS Band 3 alternative, and how long crowns and bridges last.

A crown is a cap that covers a damaged, root-treated or heavily filled tooth, restoring its strength and shape; a bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a false tooth to crowns on the neighbours (or to wings bonded behind them). Privately, a crown typically costs £450–£1,000 per unit depending on material — porcelain-bonded-to-metal at the lower end, all-ceramic zirconia or e.max and gold at the upper — and bridges are usually priced per unit, so a three-unit bridge replacing one tooth typically runs £1,300 upwards. On the NHS both are Band 3 treatment (£326.70 in England, one charge covering the whole course), typically using standard materials, which makes the NHS route dramatically cheaper where it's available and clinically appropriate. Modern practices with in-house milling (CEREC-style) can sometimes fit a crown in a single visit; otherwise expect two visits with a temporary crown in between. Well-made crowns and bridges typically last 10–15 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dental crown cost?

Privately, typically £450–£1,000 per crown: porcelain-bonded-to-metal around £450–£700, all-ceramic (zirconia/e.max) around £600–£1,000, gold similar to all-ceramic. On the NHS a crown is Band 3 — £326.70 in England — and that single charge covers everything in the same course of treatment, including any fillings or extractions.

How much does a bridge cost?

Bridges are priced per unit (each supporting crown or false tooth counts as one). A conventional three-unit bridge replacing one missing tooth typically costs £1,300–£3,000 privately; a resin-bonded 'Maryland' bridge with a single wing is less. On the NHS a bridge is Band 3 (£326.70 in England) where clinically appropriate.

Crown, bridge or implant — which should I choose?

A crown restores a damaged tooth that's still there. For a missing tooth, a bridge is quicker and cheaper up front but involves preparing the neighbouring teeth; an implant (£1,800–£3,000) leaves neighbours untouched and tends to last longer, but costs more and involves surgery. It's a genuine clinical trade-off — ask a dentist to talk you through both options for your case.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

Typically 10–15 years, and often longer with good hygiene — the usual reasons for replacement are decay at the crown margin or gum recession exposing the join, not the crown itself failing. Cleaning under a bridge with floss threaders or interdental brushes is essential, and regular hygienist visits extend the life of both.

Is getting a crown painful?

No — the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic while it's shaped, and fitting the final crown is usually painless. Some sensitivity for a few days after each stage is normal. If a crowned tooth aches persistently or is tender to bite on, contact your dentist: it can be a sign the nerve is inflamed and may need root canal treatment.
